Umahi Joins Race for Senate Presidency

Senator-elect Dave Umahi, representing Ebonyi South senatorial district, , has officially announced his candidacy for the position of Senate President. Umahi announced his intentions on Wednesday in Abakaliki during a meeting with members of the state executive council, stating that he is highly qualified for the position.

Umahi urged the national leadership of the party, the President-elect, and his Vice President to allocate the Senate presidency to the South East. “They should also allocate the House of Representatives speakership to the North-West, as this would soothe frayed nerves,” he said.

There are indications that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may assign the position of the 10th Senate President to the Southeast. The party may also select a Christian senator for the role, considering that the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, and his Vice, Kashim Shettima, are both Muslims.

Recalls that on Tuesday, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the Chief Whip of the Senate, warned that since Nigeria is a secular state, it would not be appropriate for individuals of the same religious faith to hold the country’s top three political positions. Kalu, speaking to journalists, insisted that it was his turn to become the Senate President, noting that he is the highest-ranking APC Senator from the South East.
