Tony Nwulu, a former lawmaker representing the Oshodi-Isolo 2 Federal Constituency, has been unveiled as the running mate for Athan Achonu, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Imo state. This strategic move comes ahead of the highly anticipated state governorship election scheduled to take place in November.
Nwulu, who previously contested as a candidate for the United Progressive Party (UPP) in the 2019 Imo state governorship election, brings a wealth of experience to the LP ticket. As a former legislator and representative of the Oshodi-Isolo 2 Federal constituency in Lagos state under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 2015 to 2019, Nwulu has a deep understanding of the political landscape.
The official unveiling of Nwulu took place at the Labour Party secretariat along MCC Road in Owerri, the capital city of Imo State, on Sunday. Supporters of the party gathered to witness this significant moment, which marks a strategic alliance between two influential figures in the state’s political arena.
Nwulu expressed his commitment to addressing critical issues affecting the state once elected into office. He highlighted that the administration’s top priority would be tackling insecurity by establishing committees tasked with investigating the root causes and finding sustainable solutions. Additionally, urgent attention would be given to addressing unemployment and improving the education sector.
The announcement of Nwulu as the running mate follows Athan Achonu’s emergence as the Labour Party’s governorship candidate after a closely contested primary in April. Achonu secured 134 votes, defeating Major General Jack Ogunewe, his closest rival, who garnered 121 votes.
It is worth noting that Senator Achonu had previously served as a member of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Senate, representing Imo North on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015. However, his election victory was overturned by the Appeal Court in December 2015, citing the absence of the Accord Party’s logo on the ballot papers used during the National Assembly election. Benjamin Uwajumogu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was subsequently declared the winner of the polls.
With Nwulu’s entry into the race as Achonu’s running mate, the Labour Party aims to strengthen its position and present a formidable team to Imo state voters in the upcoming governorship election.
