Prof. Okey Reuben Okechukwu, the Provost of the Federal College of Education Technical, Isu Ebonyi State, has urged Nigerian leaders and philanthropists to sponsor or support indigent students in order to eradicate crime and other social vices that afflict the country.
During the college’s inaugural matriculation ceremony, where 157 students were admitted and matriculated, Prof. Okechukwu stressed the significance of supporting underprivileged students as a means to combat criminality in society. He referenced the cautionary words of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who warned that if the children of the less privileged are not given opportunities, they may not allow the privileged ones to live in peace.
Provost Okechukwu said “It is imperative that we join hands in supporting indigent students. By doing so, we can combat criminal activities and create a safer and more prosperous society for all.”
Prof. Okechukwu also highlighted the challenges faced by Nigerian youths and teenagers due to the lack of resources to keep up with the knowledge economy, a global positive trait. This shortage of resources often leads to engaging in threatening activities that hinder the overall well-being of society.
He emphasized “Our youths are struggling to keep pace with the rapidly advancing knowledge economy, and this contributes to some engaging in negative behaviours that hinder our societal growth. Supporting indigent students can provide them with a path to a brighter future.”
Addressing the newly matriculated students, the Provost urged them to prioritize their studies and steer clear of distractions. He emphasized that being in college presents a unique opportunity for personal and academic growth.
Furthermore, Prof. Okechukwu expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari and the college’s visitor, His Excellency Sen. Ahmed Bola Tinubu, for their unwavering commitment to promoting quality education in the country. He called upon individuals blessed with resources to support the younger generation in their pursuit of education, which would effectively redirect many youths away from social vices and miscreances, including insecurity and cybercrime.
In his remarks, the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, represented by the state Commissioner for Education (Tertiary Education), Professor Omari Omaka, urged the college’s lecturers to impart practical-oriented training to the students. He assured his support for the college’s endeavours and advised the students to apply their acquired knowledge once they graduate.
