The Ebonyi State Election Petition Tribunal is set to relocate to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja, according to an announcement made by the Tribunal’s Secretary, Nyior Henry Sekulla, on Wednesday. The decision came as a result of an order from the Court of Appeal’s President, Monica Mensem.
Sekulla stated that, following this directive, the election petition Tribunal office at the Ebonyi State Judiciary Headquarters in Abakaliki has ceased its operations effective today. He added, “The Honorable Justice Monica Dongban Mensem, President Court of Appeal – HPCA, through the Deputy Chief Registrar, Election Petition Tribunal (EPT) Headquarters Abuja, has ordered the EPT’s relocation from here to FCT Abuja.”
Petitioners, legal representatives, and the public have been informed that the EPT in Abakaliki will no longer operate from its current location starting April 26, 2023. All filings, proceedings, and related activities will now be conducted in Abuja.
When asked about the rationale behind the decision to move the Tribunal to Abuja, Mr. Henry said it was not within his purview to discuss the reasons. However, he did mention that the Rivers State Election Petition Tribunal and another state’s Tribunal are similarly affected by this development.
