Anyim Slams PDP Leadership, Defends APC Support in Ebonyi

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, has criticized the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following his suspension from the party. He also expressed no regret in endorsing the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, who won the gubernatorial election in his home state of Ebonyi.

Anyim, who ran for the PDP’s presidential nomination in 2022, argued that the party leadership should be ashamed for leading the PDP to defeat in the presidential and other elections. He added that the lack of a fair hearing for suspended members invalidated the party’s actions.

The former Senate President was suspended by the PDP’s NWC on Thursday due to alleged anti-party activities. However, in a statement released on Friday, he urged the NWC to focus on advancing the party rather than causing further division.

The statement partly read, “It is disheartening that the NWC’s priority now should be examining the reasons behind their poor performance in the general elections instead of attempting to shift blame and further divide the party.”

Anyim also accused some NWC members of working against the party during the elections. He questioned the haste in suspending party leaders without giving them a fair hearing, which invalidates their actions.

Regarding the Ebonyi governorship race, Anyim revealed that the NWC imposed a candidate from the incumbent governor’s zone, violating the state’s zoning formula. Despite efforts to make the NWC understand the situation, his concerns fell on deaf ears.

He explained his decision to boycott the party’s presidential rally in Ebonyi State and support the APC gubernatorial candidate instead. Anyim called on the NWC to reconsider its decision in the party’s best interest.
