On Wednesday, January 4, 2023, a fire broke out at the Abia State High Court in Olori during office hours. The fire began at around 2:00pm and destroyed property and items worth millions of naira. Firefighters initially responded to the scene, but were unable to effectively combat the fire due to a lack of diesel for their truck.
The fire was eventually brought under control at around 4:00pm, but re-ignited later that evening and was finally extinguished. The cause of the fire was determined to be bush burning during the dry season, which spread to the court building.
While properties worth billions of naira were saved from the fire, those that were lost were valued at millions of naira. The state of Abia recorded a total of 65 and 41 fire incidents in December 2022, with two fatalities in Aba and one in Umuahia.
The state’s fire service has struggled with operational logistics, but the government has taken steps to improve the situation, including moving the State Fire Office to the Office of the Governor in 2018.
