Bishop Peter Chukwu Declines Award, Requests Release of Illegally Detained Priest

Bishop Peter Chukwu of the Abakaliki Diocese in Nigeria has declined an award offered to him by Governor David Umahi, requesting instead that the governor “facilitate the termination of murder and sundry charges” against a priest, Father Timothy Ngwuta, who has been illegally detained.

In a letter dated December 16, 2022, Bishop Chukwu wrote to Governor Umahi thanking him for the award but stating that he had only recently taken on his role as bishop and therefore did not feel deserving of the honor.

He suggested that the award be given to his predecessor, Bishop Michael Nnachi Okoro, instead.

Governor Umahi had nominated Bishop Chukwu for the award, which was to be presented on December 22, 2022, in recognition of his “illustrious service to Ebonyi State and humanity.”
