Global Great Debaters, Nigeria: Teachers’ Debate Bootcamp

Ebonyi News Network, in partnership with the Debate program at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas, invites applications to the maiden edition of her Teachers Debate Bootcamp scheduled to hold from 20th to 25th June, 2022.

Since October, 2018, Ebonyi News Network (ENN) has been constantly delivering swift and reliable news to Nigerians, bypassing proximity difficulties. In 2019, we worked with civil organizations across the country to provide digital platforms that helped to ensure the credibility of Nigeria’s general elections. Our hope that the peaceful conduct of that election will lead to the cessation of violence in Nigeria has been deeply disappointed by the recent escalation of terrorism across the Northern and Southern parts of the country, hence our decision to consider a different approach.

Having operated in Nigeria for the past four years and engaged with Nigerians in different communities, we understand that major causes of this growing spate of violence are inter-ethnic suspicion predicated on stereotypical normoactivities, lack of inclusivity, and intolerance among the over 200 ethnic groups and 500 living languages that constitute the nation.

The Bootcamp, therefore, seeks to bring teachers from different parts of the country into productive dialogue on how lasting cohesion can be achieved in Nigeria through debate. During the Bootcamp, the participants will learn how to create healthy interactional spaces within and outside their classrooms while acquiring strategic skills on managing and coaching a school debate team.

This program is all expense paid so if you are accepted, Ebonyi News Network and our strategic partners will cover your lodgment, feeding and program materials throughout the duration of the bootcamp in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

After the training bootcamp, the teachers will be deployed to their various schools across the nation where they will establish and coach students debate clubs.
