A Three-Storey Building under construction collapsed in the early hours of today. The building is located at Nkaliki opposite Abakaliki Local Government Council Headquarters.
According to reports from witnesses, no life was lost in the incident as workers had not resumed for work at the time the building collapsed.
The Secretary to the State Government and Coordinating Commissioner Dr Kenneth Ugbala Igwe accompanied by other top government officials to the scene directed that the site be sealed up and the building be demolished.
Other top government officials present included: Commissioner for Internal Security and Border Peace, Hon. Stanley Okoro Emegha and the Special Assistant to the Governor on Capital territory Development Mrs Chinyelu Udoku and Chairman of Abakaliki Capital Territory Development Board (ACTDB) Dr Uche Onwe.
Emegha directed the site engineer be arrested by the police immediately.
Udoku directed the ACTDB should produce staff that approved the building and all those in charge of monitoring the construction.
Onwe said preliminary investigation revealed the builders used sub- standard materials and the building had a lot of structural defects.
“The Engineer attached to the building did not do any professional work. The quality of iron rods, the mixture, concreting are not up to standard.
“You can see we have sealed it, there is a lot of compromise even from the foundation,” he said.
