An Ebonyi State Magistrate’s Court, in Abakaliki on Wednesday remanded a 19-year-old teenager, Obumuneme Kekere, for allegedly raping a 16-year-old year girl.
The accused person was said to have barged into a decrepit bathroom, where the victim was bathing and raped her.
The victim, it was further gathered, made attempt to shout to draw attention of passers-by, but the suspect threatened to kill her.
The Police Prosecutor, ASP Mathias Eze, said the accused person committed the offence in Okeoffia Amajim Ameka Community in the Ezza South Local Government Area of the state on February 28, 2020.
He was arraigned on one count of unlawful sexual intercourse on Wednesday.
The charge read, “That you, Obumuneme Kekere, on the 28th day of February, 2020, in Okeoffia Amajim Ameka, in the Ezza South Local Government Area, in the Abakaliki Magistrate’s District, did had unlawful sexual intercourse with one (name withheld) aged 16, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 34 (2), Ebonyi State Child Right Law and Related Matters, 2010.”
The accused was not represented in court by any counsel. Consequently, no bail application was made on his behalf.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Nnenna Onuoha, directed that the suspect be remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Abakaliki, while his case file should be transferred to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for necessary legal advice.
She adjourned the matter till March 25, 2020.
