Ebonyi state governor Chief David Umahi yesterday barred exco-member’s driver who traveled to China from returning to Ebonyi and equally announced the shutting down of his Exco-meetings till further notice as a result of the need to maintain social distance, and curbing of the spread of coronavirus.

Umahi made this known during a live state broadcast on coronavirus which took place at his Exco-Chambers, government house Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi State.

The governor said he would hold a partial meeting today and after which, there would be no more meetings until further notice.

He also barred an Ebonyi man who was alleged to be a driver to one of the commissioners who traveled to China and currently in Lagos state from entering into Ebonyi state.

The governor threatened to take drastic action against the man if he dares to return to the state without embarking on self isolation for 14 days.

Umahi noted that travelling to China at this trying moment in time is like purchasing death while alive.

He noted that the man was insistent on returning to the state against family and government advice, but it took his intervention to bar him from returning.

Umahi said he had directed the man to isolate himself in a hotel in Lagos for 14 days at government’s expense or any place of his choice after which he must go for a test before returning to the state.

The governor, however, said his administration has built two COVID-19 quarantine centres in Abakaliki and at the boarder between Enugu/Ebonyi located at Ishielu LGA.

According to him: “We have purchased a number of equipment like temperature gauge, ventilators and isolation cubicles. Our virology laboratory equipment for lassa fever will be deployed for blood sample testing of suspected COVID-19 patients with symptoms before 1st of April, 2020 when we shall have the testing kits.

“Only three centres are presently doing the testing in Nigeria- Abuja, Lagos and Edo.

“When ours comes up by 1st of April, 2020, it shall serve southeast and south south and even North Central” he noted.
